Information For Visiting Re-Enactors

The UK reenactment scene is large, busy and during the summer quite frantic.

The vast majority of events are staged between Easter to the end of October, and are best described as 'Edutainment' for members of the paying public. Most groups have at least one private event each year, but in the main events are done for public consumption. This leads to quite firm rules about the quality of Living History camps which despite this can get very large indeed - 100+ tents/structures at Hastings in October 2008.

Most (but not all) groups have attached 'Plastic Camps' as well where no rules apply, and you are pretty much free to do as you want. This part of the camp is also home to the dedicated 'Combat-Wombats' who only kit up for the battles and then just have a relaxing time. (Click here to go back to the Valhalla page.)

The major event organisers are English Heritage and The National Trust - Gov't QUANGO's who administer publically owned buildings and historic sites - or local authorities who sponsor a summer Fayre or Fete.

If your visit coincides with the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings and you would like to attend, please contact the site owner. If you would like to attaned one of the other high profile UK events (e.g. Bannockburn, Tewksbury, Tintagel) you are recommended to contact the UK LH Chat board - see link below.

If 9-11thC Viking/Saxon/Norman is what you want to see or maybe take part in please contact the site owner for an idea of what events are on during your visit, and a discussion about what level of participation might be possible.

If your interest is outside the Viking-Saxon-Norman period, and you want to meet other similar minded re-enactors, I strongly suggest you visit the Uk oriented LH chat board and say hello over there.
